Wind-driven skinny water and the most famous sight-fishing for redfish in the country
Current conditions
Very Good
Fishing score 81/100
How this score is calculated
73°F against a 62–88°F band for redfish.
Incoming (flood) at 0.2 ft, moving 0.1 ft/hr. Moderate movement; fish the tightest current seams you can find.
21 mph out of the N. Too much wind for most inshore presentations.
2.2 ft at 15 seconds. Good working surf for beaches and inlets.
Good working clarity with some colour for cover.
29.89 inHg and falling.
56% illumination — neap tides with a smaller exchange.
Fall pattern is fully established for this zone.
What should I do today?
The highest-percentage pattern for this tide and this wind.
Backup pattern
Speckled Trout — topwater walking bait at dawn, soft plastic under it in 1–5 ft. Gator trout over 28 inches sit in potholes on the grass flats, especially in winter and spring.

Targets
Target species in this zone
| Species | Activity | Depth | Best tide | Technique | Bait | Active temp | Season |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Redfish | ★★★★★ | 1–4 ft | Wind-driven — an east wind pushing water onto the west shore | Sight casting a weedless gold spoon or soft plastic | Live shrimp, cut mullet | 62–88°F | Year-round |
| Speckled Trout | ★★★★★ | 1–5 ft | Calm, clear water early | Topwater walking bait at dawn, soft plastic under it | Live shrimp, pigfish | 58–82°F | November through April |
| Black Drum | ★★★★☆ | 1–5 ft | Calm and clear | Sight casting crab or shrimp on a light jig | Blue crab, shrimp | 60–82°F | December through April |
| Snook | ★★★☆☆ | 2–10 ft | Moving water in the canal | Twitchbait along mangrove edges | Live shrimp, pilchards | 72–86°F | April through October |
- Redfish: Tail and cruise in 8–24 inches of water over grass; the biggest schools sit on hard sand edges on calm mornings.
- Speckled Trout: Gator trout over 28 inches sit in potholes on the grass flats, especially in winter and spring.
- Black Drum: Big schools of 20–40 lb drum cruise the same flats as the reds, often in the same water.
- Snook: Numbers increase south toward the Indian River and around the Haulover Canal.

Surf and beach notes
Not applicable — this is a protected lagoon. Wind direction and speed replace the tide as the main variable.
Bait in the zone
Live shrimp year-round; finger mullet during the fall run.
Patterns
Season-by-season patterns
Spring
70–80°FBig trout and reds spread across the flats; the sight-fishing window is widest before the summer algae.
Summer
84–90°FFish at first light only; the lagoon gets hot and the water often goes off-color with algae blooms.
Fall
74–84°FMullet run pulls big reds shallow and schools re-form on the west shoreline.
Winter
58–68°FThe clearest water of the year — best big-trout and black drum sight fishing, best on sunny afternoons after a front.

The water
About Mosquito Lagoon & Indian River
Mosquito Lagoon has almost no astronomical tide — water level is driven by wind. A three-day east wind stacks water on the west shoreline and floods areas that were dry mud; a north wind drains them. The lagoon averages 2–4 ft deep with seagrass and sand potholes, which makes it the premier sight-fishing water for redfish and gator trout in the United States.
Local knowledge
Expert notes
- Forget the tide chart here and read the wind history instead. Three days of east wind means the west shoreline is holding a foot of extra water and the fish are up in the grass.
- Push the boat with a pole, not the trolling motor, in less than two feet. Motor noise on hard sand pushes a 60-fish school out of casting range instantly.
- Cast past and beyond a cruising red, then bring the lure into its path — a lure landing on a fish in 12 inches of water ends the shot.
