Lower Chesapeake Bay fishing conditions and tides
Virginia · Atlantic coast · 2.6 ft mean tide range · 22 ppt
Bridge-tunnel structure, red drum schools and the largest estuary in the country
Current conditions
Very Good
Fishing score 80/100
How this score is calculated
62°F against a 46–68°F band for striped bass.
Slack low at 0.3 ft, moving 0.1 ft/hr. Near slack — expect fish to reposition and the bite to pause.
4 mph out of the S. Workable wind with useful chop.
1.5 ft at 8 seconds. Good working surf for beaches and inlets.
Good working clarity with some colour for cover.
30.14 inHg and steady.
56% illumination — neap tides with a smaller exchange.
Fall pattern is fully established for this zone.
What should I do today?
The highest-percentage pattern for this tide and this wind.
Backup pattern
Red Drum — sight casting jigs to surface schools, cut bait on the bottom in 4–25 ft. Big schools of bull reds ride the shoals off the Eastern Shore in May and again in the fall.

Targets
Target species in this zone
| Species | Activity | Depth | Best tide | Technique | Bait | Active temp | Season |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Striped Bass | ★★★★★ | 15–70 ft | Strongest hour of either tide | Jigging soft plastics tight to pilings, trolling in winter | Eels, bunker | 46–68°F | October through December, April through May |
| Red Drum | ★★★★★ | 4–25 ft | Flood over the shoals | Sight casting jigs to surface schools, cut bait on the bottom | Blue crab, cut bunker | 62–80°F | May through June, September through October |
| Speckled Trout | ★★★★☆ | 2–12 ft | Last of the outgoing over grass | Soft plastic on a light jig head, suspending twitchbait | Live shrimp, mud minnows | 55–75°F | September through December |
| Cobia | ★★★★☆ | 8–35 ft | Clean water on a light wind day | Sight casting bucktails, chumming on anchor | Live eels, menhaden | 68–82°F | June through August |
- Striped Bass: Stack on the up-current side of the bridge pilings; the biggest fish hold deep at the tunnel tubes in winter.
- Red Drum: Big schools of bull reds ride the shoals off the Eastern Shore in May and again in the fall.
- Speckled Trout: Hold in the Elizabeth River and Lynnhaven grass edges, especially through mild winters.
- Cobia: Sight-fish cruising cobia over the shoals and around buoys through the summer.

Surf and beach notes
Virginia Beach oceanfront fishes on a 2–4 ft swell; the bay side is protected on anything but a hard north wind.
Bait in the zone
Menhaden and blue crab drive the summer bite; bay anchovy and mullet take over in the fall.
Patterns
Season-by-season patterns
Spring
52–68°FBull reds and the first cobia arrive as the shoals push past 62°F; bass are staging toward the ocean.
Summer
76–84°FCobia sight-fishing on flat days, specks early and late, and deep structure fishing during the heat.
Fall
58–76°FSpeckled trout and reds fill the grass and the CBBT turns on as bait pours out of the bay.
Winter
42–50°FBig migratory stripers hold deep along the tunnel tubes — the classic winter trophy fishery.

The water
About Lower Chesapeake Bay
The lower bay is where fresh water from the Susquehanna finally meets full-strength ocean water, and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is the largest piece of fish-holding structure on the East Coast — four miles of pilings, two tunnel islands and rock rubble in 25–90 ft of water. Current, not depth, positions fish here.
Local knowledge
Expert notes
- At the CBBT, fish the up-current side of a piling and let the jig fall in the shadow line. Fish sit in the pressure break, not out in the open flow.
- Bull red schools show as a copper-colored cloud on the surface on calm mornings — approach from up-wind with the motor off and cast past the school, never into it.
- A 22 ppt bay means bait behaves differently from the open ocean; when a big rain drops salinity, specks slide toward the inlet mouths within a day.

Rules
Regulations
- Virginia saltwater fishing license required; some piers hold blanket licenses.
- Striped bass seasons in the bay are set annually and differ from the coastal season.
- Cobia requires a free permit and a harvest reporting requirement.
