Fishing score 79/100

How this score is calculated

Water temperature14.5 / 20

57°F and stable (0°F / 3 days) against a 48–56°F active band.

Barometric pressure12.3 / 15

30.28 inHg and steady (+0.03 / 24 h).

Wind7.0 / 10

18 mph out of the NW. Strong wind limits boat control and clean presentations.

Water clarity6.8 / 10

63.4 ft of visibility. Very clear — downsize line and lengthen casts.

Water level7.8 / 10

-2 ft from normal pool and stable (+0.1 ft / 7 days).

Moon & solunar5.2 / 10

56% illumination. Quarter moon — weaker feeding periods, rely on light change.

Seasonal pattern10.0 / 10

Fall pattern is fully established.

Sky & rain15.0 / 15

33% cloud, 45°F air, 0 in of rain in 24 h.

WhyWater temperature is holding near 57°F, so the fall pattern is stable, a 18 mph NW wind is stacking bait on the wind-blown banks.

Backup pattern

Jigging spoon over suspended bait for lake trout — Mackinaw from 80–250 ft. Downrigger trolling with minnow plugs, or vertical jigging structure.

Substrate

Bottom composition and why it matters

  • Rock 44%

Holds heat in spring and crayfish year-round — the first place smallmouth and staging bass set up.

  • Sand 24%

Clean bottom for bait schools and sight-feeding fish, but little cover — look for the edge where sand meets something else.

  • Gravel 20%

Primary spawning substrate. Fish stack on gravel transitions when water hits the 58–66°F band.

  • Mud 6%

Warms fastest in late winter and holds wintering bait, but goes dead in the summer heat.

  • Clay 3%

Holds hard bottom in stained water and dumps the most colour after rain. Crankbait banks.

  • Vegetation 2%

Oxygen, shade and ambush cover. The outside grass edge is the highest-percentage line on most lakes.

  • Timber 1%

Vertical cover fish use to change depth without leaving structure — key on standing timber during frontal swings.

Targets

Target species at this water

Lake Trout

Mackinaw from 80–250 ft. Downrigger trolling with minnow plugs, or vertical jigging structure.

Active temp
39–52°F
Structure
Deep rock humps, steep breaks and mid-lake basins
Technique
Vertical jigging tubes / downrigger trolling
Bait
Cisco or sucker meat on a jig
Lure
3/4–1.5 oz tube jig (4"–6")
Color
White / smoke
Retrieve
Aggressive lift, let it fall on slack line
Best time
Mid-morning; depth matters more than light

Shallow rock right after ice-out, deeper each week as the surface warms, and back onto 20–40 ft reefs to spawn in October.

Kokanee Salmon

Fall run into Taylor Creek; trolled at 40–90 ft through summer.

Active temp
48–56°F
Structure
Open basin, suspended over the thermocline
Technique
Downrigger trolling with dodger and hoochie
Bait
Shoepeg corn on the hook
Lure
Pink hoochie behind a dodger (1"–2")
Color
Pink / UV orange
Retrieve
Troll 1.0–1.5 mph
Best time
First three hours of daylight

Follows the 50–54°F band down through summer, then stages near tributaries to spawn in fall.

Rainbow Trout

Near tributary mouths and the top 30 ft in spring and fall.

Active temp
45–65°F

Bait
Nightcrawler or dough bait off bottom
Lure
1/8 oz casting spoon (1"–3")
Color
Silver / rainbow pattern
Retrieve
Steady with occasional stalls
Best time
First light and overcast afternoons

Cruises the surface layer whenever water is under 60°F and drops to the oxygenated band just above the thermocline in mid-summer.

Smallmouth Bass

Limited but present in the shallow south-shore bays.

Active temp
52–74°F
Structure
Rock transitions, gravel flats, current seams and offshore humps
Technique
Ned rig / drop shot
Bait
Crayfish, leeches
Lure
2.75 in Ned-rig finesse worm (2.5"–4")
Color
Green pumpkin / smoke purple
Retrieve
Drag and pause, 3–5 second pauses
Best time
Mid-morning on cold fronts, low light in summer

Holds deep rock until water hits 48°F, moves to gravel spawning flats at 58–64°F, then splits between shallow current and 20–30 ft humps through summer.

Patterns

Season-by-season patterns

Winter

42–45°F

Mackinaw move shallower than most expect — 60–120 ft. Jigging tubes on structure is highly effective.

Spring

45–52°F

The best shallow mackinaw window; troll the 60–100 ft contour along the west shore.

Summer

62–68°F

Deep: 150–250 ft on downriggers. Kokanee suspend at 50–90 ft and are the easier target.

Fall

50–62°F

Kokanee stage at the tributaries and turn red; mackinaw move onto 40–80 ft reefs to spawn.

The water

About Lake Tahoe

Tahoe is one of the clearest and deepest lakes in North America. Visibility of 50–70 ft is normal, which forces long lines and light presentations. Mackinaw (lake trout) are the primary target, taken deep on downriggers or by jigging structure, with kokanee and rainbows in the upper water column.

Local knowledge

Expert notes

  • In 60 ft of visibility, fish see everything. Fluorocarbon leaders and small terminal tackle materially change catch rates here, even at 150 ft.
  • Mackinaw relate to the edge of a structure, not the top. Find the 100 ft break next to a 180 ft basin and work the lip of it.

Rules

Regulations

  • Either a California or Nevada license is valid on Lake Tahoe itself under a reciprocal agreement.
  • Trout: 5 per day with only 2 mackinaw (verify current rule).
  • Tributary streams have separate seasons and closures.
  • Mandatory watercraft inspection for invasive species before launching.

Always verify current regulations with the relevant state wildlife agency before fishing. California Department of Fish & Wildlife
