Fishing score 90/100

How this score is calculated

Water temperature17.4 / 20

76°F and falling (-1.4°F / 3 days) against a 58–82°F active band.

Barometric pressure13.5 / 15

29.67 inHg and falling (-0.13 / 24 h).

Wind10.0 / 10

11 mph out of the W. Ideal chop on wind-blown structure.

Water clarity10.0 / 10

2 ft of visibility. Good working clarity for both reaction and finesse baits.

Water level8.9 / 10

-1 ft from normal pool and falling (-0.7 ft / 7 days).

Moon & solunar5.2 / 10

56% illumination. Quarter moon — weaker feeding periods, rely on light change.

Seasonal pattern10.0 / 10

Fall pattern is fully established, with good flow on a current-driven fishery.

Sky & rain15.0 / 15

34% cloud, 68°F air, 0 in of rain in 24 h.

WhyWater has dropped 1.4°F in three days, so fish are sliding back to the first deeper break, falling pressure ahead of a change usually triggers a feeding window, a 11 mph W wind is stacking bait on the wind-blown banks.

Backup pattern

Slow trolling small jigs at 0.6 mph for crappie — Speckled perch congregate in the open water off the grass line in winter; slow-troll jigs in 6–9 ft.

Substrate

Bottom composition and why it matters

  • Vegetation 42%

Oxygen, shade and ambush cover. The outside grass edge is the highest-percentage line on most lakes.

  • Mud 30%

Warms fastest in late winter and holds wintering bait, but goes dead in the summer heat.

  • Sand 14%

Clean bottom for bait schools and sight-feeding fish, but little cover — look for the edge where sand meets something else.

  • Clay 6%

Holds hard bottom in stained water and dumps the most colour after rain. Crankbait banks.

  • Rock 3%

Holds heat in spring and crayfish year-round — the first place smallmouth and staging bass set up.

  • Gravel 2%

Primary spawning substrate. Fish stack on gravel transitions when water hits the 58–66°F band.

  • Timber 2%

Vertical cover fish use to change depth without leaving structure — key on standing timber during frontal swings.

  • Brush / artificial 1%

Man-made brush piles and docks concentrate crappie and bass, especially where they sit on a depth change.

Targets

Target species at this water

Largemouth Bass

Florida-strain bass spawn from December through March. Flip reed heads and isolated grass, or work an eelgrass edge with a swim jig.

Active temp
58–82°F
Structure
Submerged grass edges, main-lake points, laydowns and dock lines
Technique
Texas rig / swimbait
Bait
Live shiners
Lure
4.5 in paddle-tail swimbait (3.5"–5")
Color
Green pumpkin / natural shad
Retrieve
Slow to moderate, bottom contact every few feet
Best time
First 3 hours after sunrise and the last 2 before dark

Stages from wintering creek channels to secondary points at 52–58°F, spawns on hard bottom at 62–68°F, then slides to grass edges and ledges once surface water passes 78°F.

Crappie

Speckled perch congregate in the open water off the grass line in winter; slow-troll jigs in 6–9 ft.

Active temp
50–72°F
Structure
Brush piles, standing timber, bridge pilings and creek-channel bends
Technique
Vertical jigging / live-scope casting
Bait
Minnows under a slip float
Lure
1/16 oz hair or plastic jig (1.5"–2")
Color
Chartreuse / black-blue in stained water
Retrieve
Hold still above the fish, tiny shakes
Best time
Late afternoon and full dark under lights

Moves to shallow wood at 56–62°F to spawn, then relates to 12–20 ft brush all summer, and follows shad into creek arms in fall.

Bluegill & Panfish

Bream beds along the sand pockets in the grass from April through August.

Active temp
60–82°F
Structure
Beds on hard bottom, dock shade, inside weed lines
Technique
Small jig under a float
Bait
Red worms, crickets
Lure
1/32 oz jig (1")
Color
Black-chartreuse
Retrieve
Dead-stick with tiny twitches
Best time
Mid-morning to mid-afternoon

Beds through several moon cycles from 68°F on, then holds the inside weed edge.

Catfish

Channel cats in the rim canal year round.

Active temp
60–85°F
Structure
River channels, holes below points, flats adjacent to deep water
Technique
Anchored cut bait / drifting flats
Bait
Cut shad, skipjack, chicken liver
Lure
Circle hook 6/0–8/0 on a Santee rig (Palm-size bait chunks)
Color
n/a — scent driven
Retrieve
Static or 0.5–0.8 mph controlled drift
Best time
Sunset to midnight; all day when water is stained

Pushes shallow to spawn in rock and bank holes at 70–78°F, then feeds on channel edges at night through summer and gorges on shad in the fall.

Patterns

Season-by-season patterns

Winter

64–70°F

Peak spawn. Wild shiners and flipping baits in the reeds; this is the trophy window on the lake.

Spring

72–82°F

Post-spawn fish move to outside grass lines and pepper grass; a frog over matted hyacinth at sunrise is the classic.

Summer

86–88°F

Early topwater in the eelgrass, then punch heavy mats with 1.5 oz weights through the midday heat.

Fall

74–84°F

Fish spread across the outside grass. Cover water with a swim jig and a bladed jig on the edges.

The water

About Lake Okeechobee

Okeechobee is enormous and almost uniformly shallow — average depth around 9 ft — so everything here is a vegetation pattern. Kissimmee grass, eelgrass, pepper grass, hyacinth mats and reed lines define where fish live, and the lake level published by the Corps of Engineers changes which zones are even fishable.

Local knowledge

Expert notes

  • Check the Corps lake stage before you drive down. Below about 12.5 ft the south-shore grass zones get hard to reach and the fish push out to the rim.
  • A north wind in winter muddies the south end within hours. When that happens, run to the north shore where the reeds break the wind and the water stays clean.

Logistics

Access, ramps and boating

marina

Roland & Mary Ann Martin's Marina (Clewiston)

Bait, wild shiners, guides and ramp access to the south end.

boat ramp

Okee-Tantie (Okeechobee)

North-end access to the Kissimmee River mouth and Harney Pond.

Rim canal shoreline

Miles of bank access along the Herbert Hoover Dike levee, good for crappie and catfish.

Rules

Regulations

  • Florida freshwater fishing license required for most anglers 16–64.
  • Black bass: 5 per day, only one may be 16 in or longer (verify current south-region rule).
  • Crappie: 25 per day.
  • Airboat and navigation rules apply in the marsh zones; some areas are closed seasonally for wildlife.

Always verify current regulations with the relevant state wildlife agency before fishing. Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission
