Fishing score 81/100

How this score is calculated

Water temperature19.9 / 20

59°F and stable (+0.2°F / 3 days) against a 48–70°F active band.

Barometric pressure9.0 / 15

30.28 inHg and rising (+0.13 / 24 h).

Wind7.8 / 10

3 mph out of the NE. Light wind — expect fish to be spooky in shallow water.

Water clarity8.2 / 10

11.1 ft of visibility. Very clear — downsize line and lengthen casts.

Water level8.4 / 10

-1.4 ft from normal pool and falling (-1.1 ft / 7 days).

Moon & solunar5.2 / 10

56% illumination. Quarter moon — weaker feeding periods, rely on light change.

Seasonal pattern10.0 / 10

Fall pattern is fully established, with good flow on a current-driven fishery.

Sky & rain12.0 / 15

88% cloud, 70°F air, 0.8 in of rain in 24 h.

WhyWater temperature is holding near 59°F, so the fall pattern is stable, rising post-front pressure tightens fish to cover and slows the bite, heavy cloud extends the low-light bite well past sunrise.

Backup pattern

Jerkbait on wind-blown rock for smallmouth bass — Rocky points and docks in 8–25 ft from May through October.

Substrate

Bottom composition and why it matters

  • Rock 30%

Holds heat in spring and crayfish year-round — the first place smallmouth and staging bass set up.

  • Gravel 20%

Primary spawning substrate. Fish stack on gravel transitions when water hits the 58–66°F band.

  • Sand 14%

Clean bottom for bait schools and sight-feeding fish, but little cover — look for the edge where sand meets something else.

  • Mud 14%

Warms fastest in late winter and holds wintering bait, but goes dead in the summer heat.

  • Vegetation 12%

Oxygen, shade and ambush cover. The outside grass edge is the highest-percentage line on most lakes.

  • Clay 8%

Holds hard bottom in stained water and dumps the most colour after rain. Crankbait banks.

  • Timber 2%

Vertical cover fish use to change depth without leaving structure — key on standing timber during frontal swings.

Targets

Target species at this water

Northern Pike

Trophy pike in the weedy southern end and the chain lakes; dead bait and big spoons in spring.

Active temp
48–70°F
Structure
Weed flats, bay mouths and shallow rock
Technique
Spoons / spinnerbaits over weeds
Bait
Dead smelt or herring
Lure
3/4 oz casting spoon (4"–6")
Color
Red-white / gold
Retrieve
Fast and erratic
Best time
Mid-morning through afternoon

Spawns in shallow bays right after ice-out, holds on the first weed edge through summer and pushes shallow again in cool fall water.

Smallmouth Bass

Rocky points and docks in 8–25 ft from May through October.

Active temp
52–74°F
Structure
Rock transitions, gravel flats, current seams and offshore humps
Technique
Ned rig / drop shot
Bait
Crayfish, leeches
Lure
2.75 in Ned-rig finesse worm (2.5"–4")
Color
Green pumpkin / smoke purple
Retrieve
Drag and pause, 3–5 second pauses
Best time
Mid-morning on cold fronts, low light in summer

Holds deep rock until water hits 48°F, moves to gravel spawning flats at 58–64°F, then splits between shallow current and 20–30 ft humps through summer.

Rainbow Trout

Trolled in the top 30 ft in spring and fall.

Active temp
45–65°F
Structure
Inflows, spring seeps, rip-rap banks and the thermocline in summer
Technique
Small spoons / inline spinners
Bait
Nightcrawler or dough bait off bottom
Lure
1/8 oz casting spoon (1"–3")
Color
Silver / rainbow pattern
Retrieve
Steady with occasional stalls
Best time
First light and overcast afternoons

Cruises the surface layer whenever water is under 60°F and drops to the oxygenated band just above the thermocline in mid-summer.

Lake Trout

Deep basin fish taken on downriggers.

Active temp
39–52°F
Structure
Deep rock humps, steep breaks and mid-lake basins
Technique
Vertical jigging tubes / downrigger trolling
Bait
Cisco or sucker meat on a jig
Lure
3/4–1.5 oz tube jig (4"–6")
Color
White / smoke
Retrieve
Aggressive lift, let it fall on slack line
Best time
Mid-morning; depth matters more than light

Shallow rock right after ice-out, deeper each week as the surface warms, and back onto 20–40 ft reefs to spawn in October.

Patterns

Season-by-season patterns

Winter

40–42°F

Pike remain catchable on dead bait in the shallow southern bays; deep trolling for chinook continues.

Spring

45–58°F

The best pike window right after ice-out in the bays; smallmouth move onto rock as water hits 55°F.

Summer

68–72°F

Smallmouth on rock all day; pike push to the deep weed edge; salmon go deep.

Fall

48–64°F

Big pike feed hard on the weed edges; smallmouth school on deeper points.

About Lake Coeur d'Alene

Coeur d'Alene is a long, deep natural lake fed by the Coeur d'Alene and St. Joe rivers. It offers an unusual mix: deep-trolled chinook salmon, trophy northern pike in the southern weedy end, and smallmouth bass on the rocky shorelines.

Local knowledge

Expert notes

  • The pike bite here tracks the weed growth. In early spring, before weeds emerge, fish the dark mud bottom in 4–8 ft — it warms first and pike stack there.
  • Smallmouth relate to the transition from gravel to boulder. Idle the shoreline with side imaging and mark those changes; they are worth more than any single spot.

Rules

Regulations

  • Idaho fishing license required.
  • Northern pike: liberal limits in the Coeur d'Alene system — the agency manages them as a non-native species.
  • Chinook salmon: specific bag limits apply.
  • Tribal waters in the southern lake have additional rules.
