How this score is calculated

Water temperature20.0 / 20

68°F and falling (-2.2°F / 3 days) against a 55–72°F active band.

Barometric pressure9.0 / 15

30.33 inHg and rising (+0.10 / 24 h).

Wind7.8 / 10

4 mph out of the NW. Light wind — expect fish to be spooky in shallow water.

Water clarity8.2 / 10

6.3 ft of visibility. Good working clarity for both reaction and finesse baits.

Water level9.0 / 10

-0.9 ft from normal pool and falling (-0.5 ft / 7 days).

Moon & solunar5.2 / 10

56% illumination. Quarter moon — weaker feeding periods, rely on light change.

Seasonal pattern10.0 / 10

Fall pattern is fully established, with light flow on a current-driven fishery.

Sky & rain12.0 / 15

95% cloud, 78°F air, 1.2 in of rain in 24 h.

WhyWater has dropped 2.2°F in three days, so fish are sliding back to the first deeper break, heavy cloud extends the low-light bite well past sunrise.

Backup pattern

Squarebill crankbait along hard cover for largemouth bass — Herring-feeders on main-lake points and humps; a walking topwater at dawn is the signature pattern.

  • Long clay points
  • Dock lines in Bear Creek and Rocky Creek
  • Standing timber in the upper lake

Substrate

Bottom composition and why it matters

  • Clay 24%

Holds hard bottom in stained water and dumps the most colour after rain. Crankbait banks.

  • Gravel 18%

Primary spawning substrate. Fish stack on gravel transitions when water hits the 58–66°F band.

  • Rock 14%

Holds heat in spring and crayfish year-round — the first place smallmouth and staging bass set up.

  • Sand 14%

Clean bottom for bait schools and sight-feeding fish, but little cover — look for the edge where sand meets something else.

  • Mud 14%

Warms fastest in late winter and holds wintering bait, but goes dead in the summer heat.

  • Vegetation 8%

Oxygen, shade and ambush cover. The outside grass edge is the highest-percentage line on most lakes.

  • Timber 7%

Vertical cover fish use to change depth without leaving structure — key on standing timber during frontal swings.

  • Brush / artificial 1%

Man-made brush piles and docks concentrate crappie and bass, especially where they sit on a depth change.

Targets

Target species at this water

Striped Bass

Free-lined herring over 20–40 ft in summer; surface schooling in the lower lake in fall.

Active temp
55–72°F
Structure
Open-water bait schools, river channels, dam tailraces and long points
Technique
Live bait planer boards / vertical jigging
Bait
Live gizzard shad or herring
Lure
1 oz flutter spoon or 5 in swimbait (4"–7")
Color
Chrome / pearl white
Retrieve
Vertical lift-drop or steady mid-column pull
Best time
Dawn and the hour either side of dark

Runs up major tributaries in spring at 55–65°F, suspends over the thermocline through summer, and schools on the surface chasing shad once water falls under 70°F.

Largemouth Bass

Herring-feeders on main-lake points and humps; a walking topwater at dawn is the signature pattern.

Active temp
58–82°F
Structure
Submerged grass edges, main-lake points, laydowns and dock lines
Technique
Texas rig / swimbait
Bait
Live shiners
Lure
4.5 in paddle-tail swimbait (3.5"–5")
Color
Green pumpkin / natural shad
Retrieve
Slow to moderate, bottom contact every few feet
Best time
First 3 hours after sunrise and the last 2 before dark

Stages from wintering creek channels to secondary points at 52–58°F, spawns on hard bottom at 62–68°F, then slides to grass edges and ledges once surface water passes 78°F.

Crappie

Brush at 12–20 ft; excellent spring bite in the creek arms.

Active temp
50–72°F
Structure
Brush piles, standing timber, bridge pilings and creek-channel bends
Technique
Vertical jigging / live-scope casting
Bait
Minnows under a slip float
Lure
1/16 oz hair or plastic jig (1.5"–2")
Color
Chartreuse / black-blue in stained water
Retrieve
Hold still above the fish, tiny shakes
Best time
Late afternoon and full dark under lights

Moves to shallow wood at 56–62°F to spawn, then relates to 12–20 ft brush all summer, and follows shad into creek arms in fall.

Catfish

Blues and channels on main-lake flats.

Active temp
60–85°F
Structure
River channels, holes below points, flats adjacent to deep water
Technique
Anchored cut bait / drifting flats
Bait
Cut shad, skipjack, chicken liver
Lure
Circle hook 6/0–8/0 on a Santee rig (Palm-size bait chunks)
Color
n/a — scent driven
Retrieve
Static or 0.5–0.8 mph controlled drift
Best time
Sunset to midnight; all day when water is stained

Pushes shallow to spawn in rock and bank holes at 70–78°F, then feeds on channel edges at night through summer and gorges on shad in the fall.

Patterns

Season-by-season patterns

Winter

50–56°F

Stripers follow herring into the creeks; bass hold on deep points and brush in 20–30 ft.

Spring

58–76°F

Bass spawn on protected clay banks and dock pockets; herring spawn on hard bottom in May and the topwater bite explodes.

Summer

84–87°F

Deep and early. Drop shot brush at 25–35 ft, or downline live herring for stripers over the thermocline.

Fall

62–80°F

Schooling fish everywhere in the lower lake; keep a topwater and a fluke on the deck.

About Lake Murray

Murray is a large, relatively clear Saluda River reservoir with a blueback-herring forage base. Bass and stripers are open-water oriented and follow herring schools over humps, points and the main channel, while docks and brush hold fish in the creek arms.

Local knowledge

Expert notes

  • When herring spawn on the rip-rap and hard clay in May, the shallow topwater window can last only 40 minutes at sunrise. Be on the spot early, not driving to it.
  • Bass on a herring lake suspend. If your electronics show fish at 18 ft over 40 ft of water, fish 18 ft — bottom contact is often the wrong answer here.

Rules

Regulations

  • South Carolina fishing license required.
  • Largemouth bass: 5 per day, 14 in minimum (verify current rule).
  • Striped bass: seasonal creel and size limits apply — they change through the year on Murray.
  • Herring collection requires following state bait regulations.
