Fishing score 81/100

How this score is calculated

Water temperature19.9 / 20

70°F and falling (-1.4°F / 3 days) against a 58–82°F active band.

Barometric pressure9.0 / 15

30.34 inHg and rising (+0.05 / 24 h).

Wind7.8 / 10

3 mph out of the N. Light wind — expect fish to be spooky in shallow water.

Water clarity10.0 / 10

2.4 ft of visibility. Good working clarity for both reaction and finesse baits.

Water level8.6 / 10

+1.3 ft from normal pool and falling (-0.9 ft / 7 days).

Moon & solunar5.2 / 10

56% illumination. Quarter moon — weaker feeding periods, rely on light change.

Seasonal pattern10.0 / 10

Fall pattern is fully established, with light flow on a current-driven fishery.

Sky & rain10.5 / 15

5% cloud, 79°F air, 0 in of rain in 24 h.

WhyWater has dropped 1.4°F in three days, so fish are sliding back to the first deeper break, bright sun keeps fish on shade lines and the deep side of structure.

Backup pattern

Slow trolling small jigs at 0.6 mph for crappie — Standing timber in 18–25 ft near the river channel; spring fish move to the Black Forest.

Substrate

Bottom composition and why it matters

  • Vegetation 22%

Oxygen, shade and ambush cover. The outside grass edge is the highest-percentage line on most lakes.

  • Clay 20%

Holds hard bottom in stained water and dumps the most colour after rain. Crankbait banks.

  • Mud 18%

Warms fastest in late winter and holds wintering bait, but goes dead in the summer heat.

  • Sand 14%

Clean bottom for bait schools and sight-feeding fish, but little cover — look for the edge where sand meets something else.

  • Gravel 9%

Primary spawning substrate. Fish stack on gravel transitions when water hits the 58–66°F band.

  • Timber 9%

Vertical cover fish use to change depth without leaving structure — key on standing timber during frontal swings.

  • Rock 6%

Holds heat in spring and crayfish year-round — the first place smallmouth and staging bass set up.

  • Brush / artificial 2%

Man-made brush piles and docks concentrate crappie and bass, especially where they sit on a depth change.

Targets

Target species at this water

Largemouth Bass

Offshore grass edges in 12–18 ft hold the tournament-winning schools from June through September.

Active temp
58–82°F
Structure
Submerged grass edges, main-lake points, laydowns and dock lines
Technique
Texas rig / swimbait
Bait
Live shiners
Lure
4.5 in paddle-tail swimbait (3.5"–5")
Color
Green pumpkin / natural shad
Retrieve
Slow to moderate, bottom contact every few feet
Best time
First 3 hours after sunrise and the last 2 before dark

Stages from wintering creek channels to secondary points at 52–58°F, spawns on hard bottom at 62–68°F, then slides to grass edges and ledges once surface water passes 78°F.

Crappie

Standing timber in 18–25 ft near the river channel; spring fish move to the Black Forest.

Active temp
50–72°F
Structure
Brush piles, standing timber, bridge pilings and creek-channel bends
Technique
Vertical jigging / live-scope casting
Bait
Minnows under a slip float
Lure
1/16 oz hair or plastic jig (1.5"–2")
Color
Chartreuse / black-blue in stained water
Retrieve
Hold still above the fish, tiny shakes
Best time
Late afternoon and full dark under lights

Moves to shallow wood at 56–62°F to spawn, then relates to 12–20 ft brush all summer, and follows shad into creek arms in fall.

Catfish

Blue catfish drift the main-lake flats in 20–30 ft.

Active temp
60–85°F
Structure
River channels, holes below points, flats adjacent to deep water
Technique
Anchored cut bait / drifting flats
Bait
Cut shad, skipjack, chicken liver
Lure
Circle hook 6/0–8/0 on a Santee rig (Palm-size bait chunks)
Color
n/a — scent driven
Retrieve
Static or 0.5–0.8 mph controlled drift
Best time
Sunset to midnight; all day when water is stained

Pushes shallow to spawn in rock and bank holes at 70–78°F, then feeds on channel edges at night through summer and gorges on shad in the fall.

Bluegill & Panfish

Bream beds on hard sand pockets from May through July are thick and easy to find.

Active temp
60–82°F
Structure
Beds on hard bottom, dock shade, inside weed lines
Technique
Small jig under a float
Bait
Red worms, crickets
Lure
1/32 oz jig (1")
Color
Black-chartreuse
Retrieve
Dead-stick with tiny twitches
Best time
Mid-morning to mid-afternoon

Beds through several moon cycles from 68°F on, then holds the inside weed edge.

Patterns

Season-by-season patterns

Winter

50–58°F

Fish hold on the deep grass edge and creek channel swings in 15–25 ft. A slow jig or football jig dragged on the break is the pattern.

Spring

58–76°F

Pre-spawn bass stack on secondary points in 6–10 ft; the spawn runs in waves from mid-March through April on hard-bottom pockets.

Summer

84–89°F

Classic offshore Rayburn: Carolina rigs and deep crankbaits on humps and the outside grass line in 14–20 ft.

Fall

63–80°F

Shad move into the creeks, bass follow. A white spinnerbait and a lipless crankbait over 4–8 ft grass covers water fast.

The water

About Sam Rayburn Reservoir

Rayburn is a huge, shallow-shouldered Angelina River impoundment defined by hydrilla, coontail, and offshore humps. Grass growth swings year to year with water level; when the hydrilla is thick the lake fishes like a jungle, and when it is thin the offshore ledge and hump bite carries the season.

Local knowledge

Expert notes

  • Watch the lake level: when Rayburn is more than 2 ft above pool the fish move into flooded bushes and the offshore bite dies for weeks.
  • On the offshore hump bite, do not start with the big crankbait. Idle the school, drop a jigging spoon to gauge their mood, then back off and cast.
